Children raising money for homeless veterans and Rockland Homes for Heroes
(L to R): Brayden & Arturo Garcia and Madelyn & Brendan Troy

The fantastic idea/initiative of raising money for our Veterans by selling “Hot Cocoa for Heroes” on a cold Veterans’ Day was a big success this year.

It was the brainchild of Brayden & Arturo Garcia and Madelyn & Brendan Troy, who along with their cousins Collin, Cassidy, and Matthew Waters, and their neighbors Allie & Cassie Waitkus and Isabella Georgetti) raised over $500 in their second annual hot chocolate stand to raise money for the “Rockland Homes for Heroes” on Western Highway in Tappan.

The homes are supported rental apartments for former homeless Veterans and are operated by our local community not-for-profit charity headquartered in the Blue Hill Plaza in Pearl River.

The “Hot Cocoa Tappan Team USA” also used social media to spread the word and encourage other youngsters to set up their own stand to raise money for our former homeless Veterans on Veteran’s Day. Special recognition to Morgan’s Publick House in Tappan who donated cans of whipped cream, napkins, brownies and stirrers to the Tappan stand and advertised it on their Facebook page, and all the neighbors who stopped by and/or donated supplies and baked goods.

I will soon be sharing another similar inspiring story about the “Hot Cocoa Pearl River Team USA” of Lyla Kiggins & Isabella Delgardio and others who started their own stand on Center Street just off West Washington Street in Pearl River and raised about $400.

Patriotism, kindness and “great parenting” are very much alive in Orangetown, a great place to raise great children.
